$BEACH PARTNERS WITH MANGROVE ACTION PROJECT

$BEACH is delighted to announce a partnership with Mangrove Action Project (MAP). MAP is a US-based nonprofit which collaborates with stakeholders at all levels to preserve, conserve, and restore our world’s mangrove forests.

By working with forest communities, research academics, forest and environment departments, policy makers, and international policy and funding groups, they encourage the preservation and conservation of existing mangroves, educate on how to restore degraded or unhealthy mangrove ecosystems, and encourage multiple generations to take an active interest in their local forests. Healthy mangroves can provide coastal communities (particularly the poorest) with a sustainable living and reduce their vulnerability to disasters from natural events such as hurricanes and storm surges. Mangroves also provide a host of other benefits to the world at large — including sequestering and storing more carbon than any other forest type per hectare.

MAP are pioneers of the ‘Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration’ (CBEMR) technique for restoring mangroves, which focuses on facilitating natural regeneration of the trees and plants. Rather than quick wins and tick-box exercises, MAP focuses on viable, long-term, equitable solutions that place the local community at centre stage. MAP supports the bottom-up approach in the search for more effective and lasting change.

MAP will be advising $BEACH on our mangrove restoration projects worldwide, and have already begun advising our team in Cebu, Phillipines who recently planted 2,500 mangrove saplings.

One of the biggest problems facing mangrove restoration projects is ocean and river waste. Unfortunately, mangrove forests around the world are being used as garbage dumps. Plastic trash which is dumped or flows down rivers wraps itself around newly planted mangrove saplings, stifling their growth and poisoning the soil as it breaks down. To counter this problem, $BEACH is in discussion with MAP about supporting their mangrove restoration projects by sponsoring mangrove clean ups to complement their education and restoration programs taking place in Honduras, Panama and around the world.
