The Beach Collective is proud to announce that, on behalf of our Tanzanian community partner Ambakofi, we have won another grant!

The $5000 grant from the Sustainable Ocean Alliance was awarded to Ambakofi and the Beach Collective in order to train 75 fishermen and women from three coastal villages on the Tanzanian coastline in sustainable mangrove restoration and maintenance. The project will cover 7.5 hectares of mangroves potentially sequestering 7,500 tonnes of carbon over their lifetimes, according to a recent estimate.

The project will make use of Mangrove Action Project's holistic model of Community Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR). Rather than mass planting, which tends to have low success rates, the CBEMR technique focuses on removing the stressors which have degraded the mangroves in the first place and the holistic involvement of the community in the project to ensure that restoration work can be maintained.

This is the third grant that the Beach Collective have won after a $3000 grant from Korea She Foundation to build “Matumaini” shop out of recycled plastic in Kakuma Refugee Camp with our community partner Kakuma Refugee Camp, and a $5000 grant from the Ashley Lashley Foundation to organise a global ocean cleanup on 29th October involving actions in 14 countries.

The Beach Collective has one or two other grant applications outstanding and hopes to have some more good news for the community soon!
